Partner Update and Open House

Below are some pictures from our Partner Update and Open House on May 20, 2010.  We had a great turnout for both events as we wrap up the 2009-10 school year and look forward to 2010-11.  Thanks to all who attended, as well as those that helped with the preparations (and thanks to Matt Grushon and Eric Copeland for some great photos)!

May 17 Parents Meeting

Below is a link to the notes from tonight's parents' meeting.  I was having trouble uploading the word document, so I apologize if the format is not as clean.  A couple of things to highlight for you...

  • If you are interested in helping Lynita Brandon put together a plan for fundraising for next year, be sure to email her at the address in the link below.
  • We would love to have parents serve on our panels (not for your own child) for portfolio presentations on June 1, 2, or 3  The times needed are from 12-1 each day.  If you are interested, please email Mrs. McFarlin (laurie.mcfarlin@daytonstemschool.org) or Dr. Boyd (brian.boyd@daytonstemschool.org).

May dates

Parents,

Just a reminder of a couple of dates coming up in May.

  • May 14 is a job shadowing day at DRSS.  Students should now have information on their job shadowing placement (most received this on 5/5, some received it today).  Be sure to talk with your child about their placement and how they will get to/from their site on May 14.
  • Our next parents meeting is set for May 17 at 5:30.  I will have some information on student numbers for next year and staffing plans; I also know that some of you would like to discuss fundraising and future plans for the parents group as the school grows.
  • May 20 is our open house from 4:30-6:00.  This is open to all current students and families, all new students and families that have been accepted to attend in the fall of 2010-11, and our business and community partners.  We hope all of you can join us and welcome our new students and families to our school community.

Five students from the Dayton Regional STEM School are joining five students from the Hughes STEM School in Cincinnati as cast members for a new, regional TV show called STEM Explorers. The STEM Explorers show will be delivered similar to "Bill Nye the Science Guy" where the host and supporting cast will work with a "live studio audience" (students in grades 4-8) to teach STEM concepts through engaging, hands-on activities. The STEM Explorers programs will be filmed live, on-site at the Boonshoft Museum in Dayton and at the Cincinnati Museum Center. We will keep you posted about when the new STEM Explorers program will be aired on Time Warner Cable stations.
