Game Night, February 5, 7-10PM

Parents:

A couple of our advisories are planning a Game Night at DRSS on February 5, from 7-10.  There will be a variety of game for students to participate in, including video games, board games, and many others.  DRSS students are able to bring up to three guests with them.

While students are taking care of much of the planning, we are in need of some extra help with this event.  We need some additional adult chaperones, as well as some help serving pizza and drinks to the students.  If you could help out that night, it would be greatly appreciated.  Please email Dr. Boyd (brian.boyd@daytonstemschool.org) or Mrs. Johnson (molly.johnson@daytonstemschool.org) if you are able to attend.

On January 25 a group from the Women’s Initiative at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) will be visiting DRSS.  This group will be presenting to our female students from 11:45-1:15.  If any parents would like to attend with their daughter, please let Molly Johnson or Robin Fisher know that you will be attending.   Below is a link that includes more information about this program at MIT.

Second Semester Start

Hello everyone.  Just a couple of updates to pass along on this first day of the second semester.

  1. This quarter we have tutors available on Mondays and Wednesdays.  One WSU students will be available from 3:30-4:30 these days to help with math, science, and engineering (AutoCAD), and another tutor is now working with us that can tutor students in Chinese.  Please let us know if your child is going to be attending this regularly.
  2. On Wednesday evening, the Dayton Area Chamber of Commerce is hosting their Business After Hours at DRSS.  It starts at 5:30 and there will be between 200-300 people attending, and we will be reminding students to tidy up their cubbies to present our school well for our guests.  This will NOT affect their ability to stay after school, but we may need have students in a classroom (instead of the commons area) as we get closer to the start of that event.
Hope everyone enjoyed the long weekend.  Thanks for all of your help.

Plan E

Parents,

Thanks for your patience last week as we experienced our first significant snow fall of the winter, and worked through our first attempt at “Plan E.”  While there were a few bugs to work through, students and teachers seemed able to log on and participate in class on Friday using Elluminate.

In terms of our status, whether we are open or closed for the day, most of the TV and radio stations, and their respective websites will report this.  However, WHIO uses a separate service that did not report us last Friday.  I am following up with them to find out what else needs to be done.  They told me initially that our status would NOT be reported on the TV, but would be on their radio stations and website.  However, that never happened last Friday.  In the mean time, I recommend using other stations and websites besides WHIO to check our status until I can get clarification.  You are also encouraged to check out our website (www.daytonstemschool.org) on these mornings, as Mrs. McFarlin posted the “Plan E” status there as well.

We have our next parents meeting tonight at 6:00PM.  Part of the agenda will be on students’ Internet and netbook usage, with information to help you as a parent to monitor this outside of the school day.
